“I am Spartacus!

“I am Spartacus!”

by Steven S. DeKnight (Executive Producer / Head Writer)

“I am Spartacus!” Those three immortal words were the first thought that seized my brain when I was approached by Starz and Ghost House Pictures to reimagine the classic historical tale. The second thought was fueled by pure fanboy glee: I’d be executive producing alongside Rob Tapert, Josh Donen, and one of my cinematic idols, Sam Raimi. And then my third thought hit. Spartacus. Stanley Kubrick, Kirk Douglas, Howard Fast, Dalton Trumbo. An epic achievement. A bold statement against the dark days of McCarthyism, The Black List, and Naming Names. One of my favorite films of all time. How do I top that?

The answer was surprisingly simple: I don’t. The Kubrick film stands alone. I had no interest in trying to copy it or improve on it (as if such a thing were even possible). As much as it pained me, I was prepared to pass on the project. However, I thought I should at least do some quick research on the subject first and see if I could expand on the historical material without emulating or attempting to improve on the Kubrick classic. What I discovered was that there is very little actually known about the man called Spartacus. So little, in fact, that historians don’t even agree if Spartacus was really the man’s name. Only fragments exist regarding Spartacus and The Third Servile War, or Slave War, as it is more popularly called. And even these fragments are contradictory. Was he a Roman? A Thracian? Did he have a wife? Was he in the Roman Army? The Auxiliary? Some say yes, others no. Most only refer to Spartacus after he escaped from Lentulus Batiatus’ ludus (gladiatorial school). Very few mention the life of the man before this event.

Ultimately it was what I didn’t find in my research that began to excite me about the possibilities of tackling the project. I wasn’t locked into the specifics of the Kubrick film because there were little or no specifics. I was free to shape the character and the story in a new and visually innovative way. I signed on for the adventure, the excitement, the romance, the triumph and the tragedy of Spartacus, a man who refused to submit to the tyranny of oppression. And oh yes, if you were wondering, our hero will proclaim those three immortal words in our series. But not, of course, the way you expect.

SUPER STOKED TO WATCH THIS NEW SERIES!
by holdmeinnj_68 on 01-22-2010 09:17 PM

This is the First AND Last time that I will Watch this Overly Exaggerated Porn flick! That should be rated beyond R. I watched weeks of advertisements for this horrible start of what is to become a series. I saw nothing but T&A, overly exaggerated blood sprays (even to the smallest wounds) and the curse words.....Did they even know those words back then?  I don't like when they try to put a modern spin on history....

They did a better job at 300, starring Gerard Butler! This overacted, overplayed horrible comic book looking series will never last. You already lost ONE watcher!

I was embarrassed watching this movie, and there is no rating low enough, in my opinion, that I could give it!

I really enjoyed this movie. I wish it was longer than an hour, since it is nothing else on television. This is my second time watching tonight. I usually do not watch series, but this seems very interesting. I am really surprised by the blood action. Movies usually does not show the blood scenes as actually happening, unless you watching 3D. The second sex scene between Spartacus and his wife looked real. It was better than soft porn. I will have to record the series due to my busy schedule.

Awesome first episode. Exciting, lush and interesting. I love history so I hope you continue to provide those details. Are the Gatae (?) the Celts? What approximate year is it?

I hope you get into some detail of the social strata. Overview, rights, resposibilities, duties. Explaining Roman society, etc. during the story.

Very excited about this series, and the beautiful women! I hope it does well.

Starz:

I was looking forward to this series, needless to say I was looking forward to a great spectacle, but..

I am soooo disappointed! Man! Did you guys learned anything from HBO and Showtime?

Series like Rome, The tudors, movies like Gladiator, maybe 300? Are you kidding me?

Bad, bad, bad! Yes I appreciate sex in the tube, but this was overkill, senseless and the story, acting, everybody looked out of place!

I will stay with Kirk Douglas's Spartacus, not Starz mediocre at best, Blood and Sand.

By the way you overdid the blood effect.
by bat on 01-23-2010 01:34 AM
An excellent first episode. Exhilarating and it gets the blood pumping.
Even the sex was time appropriate for the era and better than some of those series out there.

Bye, bye, True Blood!
Hail Spartacus!
Hail Spartacus!

Saw the first episode. Thought it was certainly well above average. Clearly John Hannah is a great actor . . . head and shouldars above most. However, I was pleasantly suprised by all the others. Good action and really fairly good dialogue. I am a bit of a Roman historian snob (yes I own Plutarch's Fall of Rome, The Makers of Rome, Tacitius' The Annuls of Imerial Rome, Seutonious' the Twelve Cesars; etc., etc. etc. and I have read them all in original Latin text) and I actually followed the pilot episode, so kudos to the staff on that point (frankly I like artistic advances which jive histoically). I amlooking forward to more episodes. Please keep doing what you are doing . . . it is working for the audience you are going to draw. I have experience/viewed many very bad movies/tv series in my day and this is NOT one of them.
by LMS on 01-23-2010 05:36 AM
What a disappointment. I had been looking forward to seeing the premire show, figuring with the name producers and dierectors that this would be a series as well done as The Tudors or The Sopranos.

The visual effects were overdone and looked like one of my nephews older video games. every little touch was emphasized by a massive blood splatter, it just looked cheesy and hokey. The fight scenes were nicely Choreographed, the set up was a bit slow but probaly required to provide a base for further shows, the actors were casted very well although there were a scene or two where the dialouge was not believable. My wife walked out of the room muttering how "stupid" the show was.

I did not mind the nudity, although I dont need to see two people humping to get the idea the like each other. The language is too modern at times, remined me of the western on HBO with all the F'ing going on.

I have not deceided if I will contine watching, most likey I will give it one or more shots to see if the show improves and becomes more like "300" vs Nintendo.

by bad show on 01-23-2010 05:51 AM
Wow " a historical depiction of ancient Rome's society and culture." Seriously! This "show" was completely over hyped and I am completely and totally disappointed. The blood splatter was that out of a bad video game. Glad that they killed his wife off though her acting was deplorable but, I can't blame her for the poor script she was given. It seemed like the writers tried to have every catch phrase possible shoved into 1 episode. "kill them all" Honestly! "kill them all"On the positive side of things Mithridates was a great menace to the Romans and i liked the historical point of view. My question is why did they "300" me with this? Are you trying to get women to watch this by putting the soldiers in thongs during battle scenes? HOT! However it might have an incling of potential if you fire the writers and change the director.
by Napoleoniv on 01-23-2010 07:43 AM
As a historian I learned a long time ago not to expect reality from TV fare. Writers, directors, and producers live, write, and work in the cracks of history where there is much ambiguity, and they have the greatest creative license. Unfortunately, it is their rendition of history which becomes the common perception of the actual event, actually re-writing history. Numerous examples of this exist. Apparently the attachment of people to the visual version takes primary place in their minds.

Having said all this, the series certainly gives a sense of the rawness of Roman times, and while one of the great civilizations of antiquity, one is struck by the paradox between what is civil and what is brutal. Everything from sex to war, from the power so tenuously held by the Romans to the savage life of the gladiator, offers us a front row seat to that which was Rome. Taken with a grain of salt, this series can provide some context to an interesting span of human history.

In conclusion, I never cease to be amazed at comments concerning sex and nudity caused by our Puritanical values. We always try to force our views on history. Sex is the biggest hang up we have as Americans and we seem to never be able to get beyond our narrow views to appreciate the fact that in history as well as other places in our world, it is no big deal.

Ok, thought Spartacus was going to B lk Gatiator & yea it has some similar effects. But OMG! It's a man show! Catering to the typical male sexual fanticy trying to play u guys lk a fiddle & making me want to run to the batheroom & hurl. Completely biased in no frontal of the males which I'm glad of in case the searies further dissapointed me but I know know more of the female characters than I ever wanted to without good reason or taste. And more lk Batman & Robin "POW!" in effects. Now for a show that is supposed to b noted for authenticity thus all the nakedness the modern day curseing & lesbianistic orgies do NOT fall in line with Roman history ...that is noted for it's male dominance & homosexuallity. None the less this series makes the playboy channel look lk a kiddie show with more taste & even made me blush & turn my head & I do not blush. Two words: Too Much! Nothing is left to the imagination as it should & the story is lost not in action but in unrealistic effects & not just nudity but raunchiness. I'm very disappointed. And not what I signed up for Starz for. Thinking of canceling.
by nazgul on 01-23-2010 10:57 AM
SPARTACUS. On STARZ Is the worse of all.. Talk about copying Gladiator and 300 in the most chessey way there could possible be ......
by nazgul on 01-23-2010 11:10 AM
I waited for months for this show to come up but NO THANKS!! I was very very disappointed by it.. it was so cheesy OMG very poor acting ... I tough this show didn't make to the big screen for being long but now that I seen it ..NOW I KNOW WHY what a JOKE!!!! WONT watch it again or maybe I will if I have a bad day so i can laugh.....
by nurseu on 01-23-2010 01:25 PM
I actually enjoyed the over exaggerated blood scenes. The soft core porn scenes were a lil disappointing. I'd like to see a lil something to bring the ladies to watch....like some full frontal from the men. At least be fair about it. I think I'll keep watching to see if I can get invested in these characters. Remember though, you're gonna have to give the ladies something to watch for. Stop teasing us with dirty sweaty hunky men and show us those swords!!!!!
by txtiket2ride2 on 01-23-2010 02:45 PM
What a disappointment after such a build up! The photography was a cheap rip-off from 300, the story line was very weak, and there was no authenticity in the least. Was Starz trying to save money or what on this series? I'll make a prediction and say this show will be lucky to last one season. Freddy Kruger offers better gore but the porn was fair and that is about the only good thing about Spartacus-Blood & Sand. Next time I'll stick with the pros who all work over on HBO or Showtime....
by Deanzilla on 01-23-2010 08:59 PM

TOO much effort to show blood splatter.........................is there a story line?

I was under-amazed due to 40 gallons of blood splatter when you get a splinter.

I'd rather go rent "Rome" made by HBO.

Long Live Legion XIII,

Titus Pulo,

Bow to Lucius Vorenus.

Saw spartacus and i tihnks its a dissappoint, the bloodscenes remind me of "sin city" also has to much computer graphics for background..in stories like this should be more realistic..its a shame coulda been a good show if they shot it outside on a location instead of indoors and relying too much on cg graphics.
by CLS on 01-24-2010 05:12 AM
I can't believe how dissapointed I was watching this.  I couldn't even finish it.  The blood spattered was so overdone it was hard to actally see the fight scenes at times.  I am not opposed to all the sex scenes, but I was surprised that when your hiding out on the hill after your village and everyone you know was killed that you wanted to have sex.....strange?  I did think the actors did a good job and looked  great, but all the extra stuff is to much, I think that if you could take out some of the special affects and tone down the sex a little it could work.  I guess we'll see.
by macy on 01-24-2010 08:34 AM
Like most of the people above I was really excited about this show. It looked great and promised to be historically accurate. Less than 5 minutes into the show every character is using the work **bleep**. Hello Steven DeKnight? Did you do no research? Don't you have a person on your staff that informs you of HUGE historical inaccuracies? The earliest the word can be traced to is 772 CE by Anglo Saxon, so how can it be used in 3 BCE?
Thanks for yanking be out of the experience 5 minutes into your show! Great job!!!!
by purplemoon71 on 01-24-2010 12:47 PM
This was a complete joke. Did you really need that much blood (which looked fake to begin with) for the slightest of cuts?? This is no 300. Does not even come close. Did they even curse that way back then...I think not. I actually considered switching to starz, because the advertisements looked promising. Thank God I did not bother. The first episode was enough to make me NOT watch another one. Good luck trying to keep this show going. You might want to go back and watch 300 and see what good acting and action looks like, because you certainly did not hit the nail on this one.

Loved Spartacus. Loved the nudity. Loved the violence. Loved the gushing blood. Call me old fashioned but these are the things that make a show great. ROTFLMAO
Raimi, Tapert, DeKnight you have always satisfied my visual needs. Be it in Xena Hercules Buffy Angel or Ash, these three men give the public what any young and very hot bloodied human being wants in their entertainment, SEX and VIOLENCE. ;p
Mr Raimi, Mr Tapert and Mr DeKnight I SALUTE YOU
Althought as a woman I would very much like to see some (preferably Andy Whitfield's), breast don't really do anything for me, as I already have them. That would be great.
Did I say I loved it? Well I do!

Wow. Spartacus: Blood And Sand. What more can one say....... I can think of something.

I was SO looking forward to this series. Couldn't wait for it to come out as I am a lover of periodical series/storyline.

In today's broadcasting standards, one expects nudity, and strong language in the series that are out on premium service broadcasting. I have no problem with this, as I do expect it. What I did not expect was the extreme of it. Not so much as the nudity, seemed standard for comparable series i.e.: The Tudors (which I might add is excellent) etc. But come on guys......There wasn't just the norm of language, but an extreme overkill. Now we're just talking vulgar to the extreme.

It's unfortunate that many writers, directors yadda yadda yadda today feel they need to go for the extreme SHOCK value to gain notice. How about toning it down a little and go for the entertainment (the good wow) value. You do want to remember: you want ratings to skyrocket, not fall through the floor.

I might stick around to view a couple episodes, but what I thought was going to be an awesome series, and something of a storyline that I would crave for more, has to date turn out to be a complete put off, and lack of enthusiasm for future viewing.

Remember: Take a tale and tell it well, it will go on forever. So far... Screeching halt.
by eyethoughtso on 01-24-2010 09:27 PM
What is with the British actor's portraying Romans. I thought they were going for the authenticity. Why not use Italians or other Latins? Mel Gibson did.

The English accents take away from the movie. It's so 1970's. Get with the new Millennium. This is 2010!!! Were you only trying to attract British audience. If so, keep the British accents. There's a whole world of other consumers that pay for Encore and commercial products, I am sure you will be losing. If you are not worried about it, it's okay. Neither was GMC with their products or services before people, like me started switching to Toyota.

As for the T and A thanks, but why not leave it to Cinemax off prime time.

The Slow motion effects were a bit overdone. Maybe okay for teens that like slasher movies, but then how do you fit in T and A.

I don't make movies, but I know what to leave out to what audience.
A group of us in California were watching the pilot. We won't be watching the series. Sorry.

I SIMPLY CANNOT WAIT FOR THE NEXT EP.!

LOVED THE BAD LANGUAGE IT'S ENTERTAINING!

MMMH! I ADORE ANDY WHITFIELD! (SPARTACUS) HE'S SO MANLY AND VERY HANDSOME SHOWING SUCH STRENGTH AND DEVOTION TO HIS WIFE! WHAT MORE COULD A GIRL ASK FOR?!

AND THE WIFE! SHE'S VERY PRETTY! I HOPE THEY WILL BE REUNITED IN THE END IF NOT I WILL BE SAD FOR THEM.

I THINK THIS WAS A GREAT 1ST EP., EVERYONE MAY OR MAYNOT SHARE MY OPINION BUT TO HELL WITH EVERYONE WHO DIDNT LIKE THIS EP.

I THINK THE SCRIPT WAS GREAT. GOOD JOB TO THE WRITER'S,AND THE ACTOR'S.

SOME PPL MAY NOT LIKE THE DRAMATIC'S BUT I DO.

KEEP UP THE GOOD JOB!
by Detarious on 01-24-2010 11:00 PM
Potentially cool show. However it is not necessary to cram too much in to one episode; the storyline was right but the attempts to add more drama ruined it. The use of the F-bomb should be reduced because it seems like they are trying too hard. The characters sound like a bunch of 13 year olds who just learned the word. The sex scenes were overly drawn out and dumb it was almost funny; perhaps on purpose? Like in 300 it was a corny slide show of a bunch of different positions. The freeze frame combat moves should be dropped along with the blood gushes because they do not come out right like in 300; maybe a budget issue? The combat should be filmed such that the moves are observably distinct and precise, or at least the kill shots. I'm trying to describe the combat in "Ong Bak" the combat looks really cool with no special effects.

Story line has a good start. I want to see Spartacus kick some butt now and get his revenge but the show needs to focus more on the right aspects.
by raejon75 on 01-24-2010 11:26 PM
THIS IS FABULOUS!!!!! AWESOME!!!! GREAT!!!! FANTASTIC!!!!! and sooooo many other words. Please do not take the criticism to heart. This series has everything in it that keeps an audiance hooked.... action, sensuality, humor, and a great story line. HBO and Showtime had me hooked on their Rome and Tudors series... but yours has taken over as my number 1 historical/fiction show EVER!!!!! please try and drag this series out as long as you can! You have a HUGE fan base here at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore...... We have already planned our Spartacus parties for the rest of the season...Keep the episodes as interesting and drama packed as the initial episode.... dont change a thing. Also is it possible for you to play the previous week's episode right before the new episode... that way we get 2 hours of the show and we can refresh our memory of what happened....Thank you
by Matt D on 01-25-2010 12:00 AM

Why wasn't Sparticus in HD?  I watced it on DirecTV 520 which is the STZeHD channel.  It was letterboxed (top & bottom) and obviously not HD quality.  Very disappointing.

Boooo to to the producers for casing a bath house dancer with obvious giant breast implants...

Definatetly not "Rome" or even "300" quality, but enjoyable none the less.

by mr_lbo69 on 01-25-2010 05:39 AM
First off let me start by saying that i thought the show was extraordinary. Thanks for giving me something to watch on a sunday night.

Now let me get to the haters, for years up people have been watching too much reality tv. i remember watching t.v for what it was.... entertainment. the fight scenes are to be rivialed, the story line was complex yet easy to follow and come on people we all know that sex sells. fact the history books continue to do there jobs anwe even have the history channel if that's waht you want. leave us, who love entertainment to our ledgens like this, as some would put it, this over exagerated blood and sex fest that seemed to be the only thing that the ancient greeks and romans had to do. showtime gave us just what we wanted. blood, guts , glory mixed in with a little sex and sprinkled with a dash of history.
by Mister on 01-25-2010 08:39 AM

Hi Steven

First, i would like to say i enjoy the "show", and thanks for your efforts.

It's catchy, but how you know, all of us have a little critic in our brain, so i have some suggestion, and constructive critics may have a good effect, making a better & more successful series.

My suggestions:

1. More accurate historical facts (will bring more fans of historic movies).
2. A little less blood in future episodes (sometimes, too much is too much).
3. A good plot/story, can make a huge difference.

U can make a fictive & interesting story of a person, when you don’t have exact facts about him (this way the story is more atractive), without to interfere with accurate historical facts (battles, habits, weapons, strategies, clothing, etc).

I know a lot of us would like to see what really happened in ancient times, and believe me, sometimes reality can beat our imagination.

In that period are so many heroic battles (wins against the odds: higher numbers or technology, etc), and few of us learn about it.

That can make a huge material for future episodes (ex: memories of Spartacus from the past).

A very good material can be take from ancient historians, and an example is the "Father of History" in Western culture, Herodotus.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Getae:

According to Herodotus, the Getae were "the noblest as well as the most just of all the Thracian tribes.”

"When Lysimachus tried to subdue the Getae he was defeated by them. The Getae king, Dromichaetes, took him prisoner but he treated him well and convinced Lysimachus there is more to gain as an ally than as an enemy of the Getae and released him."

That is a fact that very few leaders can achieve, to make an ally from your enemy, after you defeated him, and speak a lot about their diplomacy, leadership and strategy.

That is exact the opposite of how they are represented in the first episode of Spartacus - Blood and sand .

Accurate historical facts, can make a serial more credible and bring more fans.

What i liked is that your research was exact about the fact that getae have a strong relation and symbolism with wolves: “Ancient Greeks called the same people "Getae ". ... "daoi", which could be explained with a possible Phrygian cognate "daos", meaning "wolf" .

Also, in the movie, their clothing were more close to reality, furs are more useful in winter, if you don’t want to be an iceberg in half a hour.

Hope to see Spartacus turning in a huge success and we can enjoy it a long time.

by judianne on 01-25-2010 08:32 PM
Is anyone else having a problem with the fact that, in this ridiculous film, men are running around in the snow half naked and aren't even as much a shivering? I don't know of many trees that bare fruit in the middle of the winter, either, yet, in this film, it happens. They can keep the computer animation, too! it pretty much sucks!

I watched 'Spartacus Blood & Sand' first 2 episodes which I found to be very entertaining. You can tell from the first 15 seconds of the Pilot that the movie makers banked 100 % on the '300' movie special effects, computer generated graphics all the way down to the music score. We all know this got '300' the big bucks in the Box Office. I mean who really cared about the story behind it, though I must say historically the events were 99 % accurate.

As for 'Spartacus' history behind all the movies made so far I've always stuck to the book written by an Italian Writer who lived in the late 1800 by the name of Raffaello Giovagnolli. The book follows Spartacus from his days as a Gladiator in Rome through his rising and becoming the most notable leader of the slaves in the so called Third Servile War, a major slave uprising against the Roman Republic until his ultimate death on the battle field. I've yet to see a Spartacus movie made with a such accuracy.

Nevertheless any movie (leaning heavily towards brutal fight scenes, blood, guts, severed limbs, slow mo action, super hot and most of the time nude guys and girls, sexual acts, that is clearly made for pure entertainment and does not require too much thought process) is fine with me and I think a lot of other people.

So thumbs up from me !

Great series, we are definetly glue to the tube with this series.
Great Job to all the actors and actresses.
Great production.
Can't wait till friday

I liked the first two episodes. I love these types of movies. Although the bad language was part of the Roman vernacular, i think you could tone it down a notch. I was shocked with some sexual scenes but whatever. The blood splatter looked fake, i do not know if the director was trying to convey a message, or it was just entertainment. The series can do well without it. It will be better is it looks more realistic. Other than that, I think the series has potential.
by Jupiter51 on 01-31-2010 01:10 PM
I give Spartacus two thumbs up! After reading the character profiles, I can't wait to see how each one develops.
by jyku on 02-01-2010 09:45 AM
wow! incredible... i truly dont belive how impressive this movie is...ok about the hot&spicy scenes... nobody says to you to watch this movie with your kids:smileyhappy:))) and if u are under 18 then just dont watch it. ok, about the blooood & gore scenes maybe a little bit exagerate with the fullscreeen of bloood but is not so disturbing this stuffs is what makes this movie trully realistic i mean come on , Rome was as well full of naked scenes and i havent heard any complains about it.... oh and what makes this movie so realistic is his fountains of inspiration like for instance in the first episode spartacus said something about the geti that thEy carry out ON the war field banners of the wolf spirit wich represents them, thats trulLy a real fact and i was totally stunned to see that scene because i am a ROMANIAN(S-E of Europe :smileyhappy:) ) and my ancestors are the geti the DACIANS-GETI, and i know verry well my history and again this was a real stuff my ancestors were followers of some sord of a wolfGOD..... well to end it I AM THE BIGGEST FAN OF THIS NEW EPIC TVSHOW.... IIIIII AAAAM SSSPAAARRRRTAACUUSSS !!! :smileyvery-happy:
by jyku on 02-01-2010 09:58 AM
UHHH A SOMETHING ELSE.... I ALSO HAVE SOMETHING THAT I DONT LIKE... IS THE WAY OF DESCRIBING AND PICTURING MY ANCESTORS THE GETI OR GETAE THEY WASNT SOO BARBARIC AND BRAINLESS CREATURES HOW THEY APEAR IN THE FIRST EPISODE FOR THE FUTURE READ SOME HISTORY SOME HERODOTUS AND U WILL BE SURPRISED TO SEE WHO THE GETAES ARE I MEAN IS HAPPENING AGAIN LIKE THE STUPID INTERPRETATION OF VLAD TEPES KNOWN TO MOST OF U AS DRACULA A FAKE HE WAS ONE OF THE GREATEST ROMANIANS RULERS . I AM A ROMANIAN THE GETAE ARE MY ANCESTORS AND I KNOW BETTER THEN MOST OF YOU THX :smileytongue:

Like so many have already commented, this series is suuuch a disappointment, and I love movies about the Roman glory days. F-bombs 2000 yrs ago?? Get serious! Gallons of blood spurting out from a bang at the back of the head!? Stupid! I recorded the 2nd episode, but just 10 minutes into the show and I deleted it. Way too much "filler" of useless, pointless sex which reveals a lack of good and interesting scriptwriting. OK, maybe the 15 yr-olds loved it, but I look for some intelligence in a movie. Oh, what a glorious series it could have been! What a shame!
by papi4u9698 on 02-04-2010 01:23 AM
wow what an incredible pice of CRAP!!!! REALLY???? you guys couldnt do better than that did you even watch rome???? get rid of your "yes"men and get some real perspective ...bad CG and sex do not a series make. oh well i guess i can cancel my subscription at least theres showtime and hbo

Are you serious??? This is crazy!!! Who came up with this garbage, do they know history? I just watched the last episode with Spartacus "throwing up" the two fingers. That is crazy. If you want to make a movie that is fine. Dont drag down a true soilder for your own fantasy. Name your hero Bubba or some **bleep** like that. Spartacus was a true Soldier ( Like the Spartans) and if you are going to use his name, at least represent!!! I named my presa canario Spatacus beacause Spartacus was a beast! Now you come with this soft **bleep**. Whoever wrote this garbage needs to be looking for a job!!!

Two thumbs up to this series(one up where the sun doesn't shine on of the so-called critics)...
Guys,c'mon! This is entertainment! If you want historically accurate,politically-correct,sanitized programming-try Discovery Channel....
As for real history-no one is the wiser...it is said to be written by victors(so much for an objective account)
So it has blood-at least it looks better than the effort that usually comes from Hollywood...why not stylized blood? It conveys the impact of the moment...
So are we squeamish about sex and nudity-perfectly real, considering the morality of the period in question(the rich and powerful are never subjugated by morality as we average joes know it;remember that Nazi-style call girl romp that a Boss of Formula racing had sometime back?)This is a show for adults-let's act as adults and appreciate things for what they are and discard the puerile!
To the makers of this series,"Bring it on!"

BRAVO!! Now THIS is entertainment! It amazes me how much is lost by most viewers on how difficult it is to make a movie of this caliber. The sets are amazing, the dialog is very believable, the cast is tremendous! I just want to congratulate you on having the moxy to produce this program. I didn't even mention the special effects.

I grew up in a world where CG's were unheard of. All the special effects were done by man (ie., King Kong for God's sake). I cannot say enough about this production! Lucy, I love you, always have, and now you have cemented a place in my heart for you!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

P.S. and no commercials! I hate commercials!

-Caribert, newest and biggest fan!

The Spartacus story has always captured my imagination and I looked forward to watching this series. This production has a great storyline and talented actors and actresses; however, I am very disappointed at the way this series is being presented.

When I subscribed to Starz and Encore, I thought the worst rating I would be seeing would be an 'R". This series has definitely gone way past that. Masturbation scenes, blow jobs by slaves, sex on command and frontal male nudity - all are ruining what can be a blockbuster series. I'm not "into" porn or soft porn videos and don't want to see them on the channels I pay for. The "authenticity" or the display of depravity from that age of Roman history can be shown without the blatant scenes. A glance, a beckon, showing what's going on only up to a certain point - these are all tools that great directors have used in their movies. Our minds can take it from there.

My husband and I are now discussing whether to cancel our subscription to Starz. Neither one of us likes the turn Starz has taken.
