Crash Costume Design

by Amy Stofsky

As a costume designer on a show such as CRASH, I have looked to the street for inspiration. LA is a vast city and a melting pot of cultures and ethnicities. To capture its look and incorporate its street fashions and multi diversities is to CRASH into the bohemia of the east side and bring it together with the elegance of Beverly Hills. The various neighborhoods in between dictate the dress code of the city, as does the socio economics of the populace. The challenge of portraying LA in New Mexico became apparent to me on our first day of inner city shooting in Albuquerque. Before me stood a crowd of cowboys clad in fitted snap front western wear shirts and high gleamed cowboy boots. The sea of turquoise jewelry was devoid of bling, and there was neither a California blonde or a surf dude in sight. I panicked and then released my costumal tendencies into full flight and 20 minutes later we had before us Hollywood Blvd. It’s called movie magic.
